EXAMPLES

Judy Stinson designed a community-engaged learning experience for her students after volunteering at the Hampshire County Jail and House of Corrections. The students were assigned readings about OT in the criminal justice system before attending the field trip to the county jail. After a tour of the facility and a panel discussion with the inmates , a reflective paper was assigned to help students apply the concepts of occupational justice and the perceived potential role of an OT in the system.

The Department of Occupational Therapy at Duquesne University has long standing community-university partnerships with agencies serving people with criminal histories.  In 17 weeks, over 2 semesters, students participate in community engaged learning and psychosocial focused FWI and create programming meeting the needs of vulnerable and marginalized populations. This video shares a program example at Renewal Incorporated developed by Cheryl Holzworth, BA, OTS, Jennifer Polkabla, BA, OTS  and Jordan Steele, BA, OTS.

This website was originally designed and developed by Dr. Jaime Muñoz and Meredith Karavolis, M.S. OTR/L at the Duquesne University Department of Occupational Therapy. It is maintained by Dr. Muñoz and Dr. Abigail Catalano of Duquesne University in collaboration with partners at Pacific University, the University of Findlay, St. Louis University and Saint Louis Community College.
